Hay Fever

Spring and summer can be times of misery for hay fever sufferers. More than 20% of the UK population suffer from this condition, but there are many treatments and a complex of remedies.

‘Allergic rhinitis’ is the medical term for nasal symptoms caused by allergies to pollen, dust, cat hair and other airborne particles. It can be an occasional inconvenience or a severe problem. If it happens during warm weather, it may be the seasonal allergic condition known as hay fever - triggered by tree or grass pollen.

To help with such symptoms, supplements may be recommended. Quercetin can inhibit release of inflammatory histamines. Nettle leaf can combat sneezing, itching and swollen nasal passages. Vitamin C may have anit-inflammatory and antihistamine effects - it supports the immune system and is an antioxidant in the cells of the respiratory system.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils or flaxseed oil may help to reduce inflammatory symptoms. Herb teas and tinctures - made with camomile, sage, eyebright and elderflower can help with inflammation.

Homeopathic remedies including Arsen alb, Euphrasia, Pulsatilla and mixed pollen can help with irritation, inflammation and other symptoms.

Bee Pollen may help to prevent sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes, some scientists believe that the ingestion of small amounts of pollen can desensitise a person to the allergy triggering properties of pollen.

There are many possibilities and potential combinations of supplements and treatments that can be beneficial in dealing with hay fever. Seek advice about what may be best for your particular case.

Bee Products

In addition to Bee Pollen - as mentioned under Hay Fever - propolis and royal jelly are widely used for their healing properties. Bee Pollen is collect by bees from flowers - rather than wind blown from grass or trees.

Propolis is otherwise known as ‘bee glue’ - it is sticky resin that bees collect from pine tree buds to use as a repair and protection material for their hives. It is thought to act as a skin softener and a wound healer, as it contains antibacterial compounds

Royal Jelly is secreted by worker bees to feed the queen. It has been part of Chinese medicine used for restoring strength after illness. Royal Jelly is believed to give the queen bee longevity and is long used for healing benefits.

Manuka Honey

Active Manuka Honey comes from New Zealand. It is made by bees collecting pollen from the flowers of the Manuka bush (leptospermum scoparium). Not all Manuka honey is “active” and has the UMF  - Unique Manuka Factor.

It is used as a natural product both internally and topically on the skin. Apitherapy, the name given to treatment with natural honey, has been used by many different cultures throughout history. Such uses are now being reconsidered by a modern world in light of new research into the properties and uses of active manuka honey. Such uses include treatment of skin infections, fungal conditions, leg ulcers and wounds. It is used to treat diarrhoea and gastro-enteritis.

The UMF rating is a guarantee that the honey has been tested and verified for its antibacterial properties. All honey has some level of the antibacterial chemical hydrogen peroxide, which is produced by enzymes in the honey. These enzymes are easily destroyed by exposure to heat and light and also by contact with body fluids. It is now understood that some rare honeys have an antibacterial action that is separate to the peroxide effect, resulting in a much more persistent and stable antibacterial action. Such valuable honeys are resistant to losing their antibacterial activity when used in wound treatment and even have strong activity when heavily diluted by body fluids in a wound dressing. Furthermore, such honeys are now known to have a synergistic antibacterial effect with the hydrogen peroxide activity, producing a very powerful weapon against bacterial conditions

Eye Care

Modern day eyes spend hours focussed on computer screens, working under poor lighting conditions, night driving and are subjected to polluted air. Nutrients such as, Bilberry, Beta Carotene and Lutein are powerful antioxidants which may help combat tired and stressed eyes. One product that may help maintain healthy vision is Kordel’s Advanced Eye Formula

Renew your Energy

Detox & Diet

You might be looking something to help re-energise, feel good and look great.

Why? To recover mentally and physically and lose.

How to Detoxify? – it’s really about eating healthily. Eat mainly fruit and vegetables, avoiding red meat, processed foods and ready-made meals. Keep sugar, salt and wheat based food to a minimum – that means limiting your consumption pasta, bread, cakes and biscuits. Eat high fibre foods to keep your bowel moving. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day – avoiding tea, coffee and alcohol. Herbal teas are alright – they can have cleansing properties. Brush your whole body with a firm dry brush twice a day – brushing towards the heart stimulates the lymphatic system. Take regular exercise!

You can support your detox organs and general metabolism with supplements:

Milk Thistle is thought to help remove toxins and support the liver.

An antioxidant formula can help neutralise free  radicals.

Kelp is a concentrated source of minerals including iodine.

Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids have many properties that are useful. They are anti-inflammatory and keep the skin and immune system healthy. Flaxseed Oil capsules can be very useful in providing both of these important nutrient groups.
